Anglo-Mysore Wars


  • First Anglo-Mysore War (1767 – 1769) 
    • Haider Ali defeated the British Army
    • The war ended with the signing of Treaty of Madras (4th April 1769 - between Mysore and the British Lord Harry Verelst)
  • Second Anglo-Mysore War (1780 – 1784) 
    • Warren Hastings was Governor-General of India during this time
    • Battle of Porto Novo (1st July 1781) - Between forces of the Kingdom of Mysore and British East India Company
      • The British force under the command of Sir Eyre Coote defeated Hyder Ali
    • Tipu continued the war following his father's death
    • The war ended with the signing of the Treaty of Mangalore (11th March 1784), which restored the status quo ante bellum (the situation as it existed before the war)
  • Third Anglo-Mysore War (1790 – 1792)
    • The third Anglo- Mysore War was fought between Tipu Sultan and the then Governor-General of Bengal Lord Cornwallis
    • The war ended with the signing of Treaty of Seringapatam (1792)
  • The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1798 – 1799) 
    • Lord Wellesley was the Governor-General of India during this time
    • Tipu Sultan was killed in the battle
    • Battle of Seringapatanam (1799)
