Carnatic Wars


First Carnatic War (1746-1748) 
  • Between the British East India Company and the French East India Company 
  • This conflict was caused by the death of the Nawab of Arcot, who was a key ally of the British East India Company
  • The death of the Nawab led to a power struggle between his two sons, Muhammed Ali and Dost Ali
  • The French East India Company supported Dost Ali, while the British East India Company supported Muhammed Ali
  • The first Carnatic War ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle (1748) 
Second Carnatic War (1749-54) 
  • The combined armies of Muzaffar Jang, Chanda Sahib and the French Governor Dupleix defeated and killed Anwar-ud-din at the Battle of Ambur (near Vellore) in 1749 
  • Battle of Arcot (November 1751) - Between British East India Company led by Robert Clive allied with Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah and forces of Nawab of the Carnatic, Chanda Sahib, allied with the French East India Company 
  • British Governor Robert Clive emerged victorious 
  • Treaty of Pondicherry (1754) ended the war 
Third Carnatic War (1758-63) 
  • French General, Count Thomas Arthur de Lally captured the English forts of St. David
  • Battle of Wandiwash (1760) - Third Carnatic War was won by the English on January 22, 1760 at Wandiwash (or Vandavasi) in Tamil Nadu 
    • General Eyre Coote defeated French army
